The Rifle Path
Graduated group standards. Earn each rank by logging a qualifying group.
Log your first 5-shot group at 100 yards. Size doesn't matter yet — establish your baseline and start the loop.
A 5-shot group inside 3 inches at 100yd (≈3 MOA). This is solid, repeatable fundamentals — position, breathing, and trigger working together.
5 shots inside 2 inches at 100yd (≈2 MOA). Now your fundamentals are consistent shot-to-shot, not just occasionally.
5 shots inside 1.5 inches at 100yd. You're calling your shots and reading your own errors. Ammo and rifle quality start to matter.
The benchmark. A 5-shot group inside 1 inch at 100yd. Everything — position, NPA, breath, trigger, follow-through, parallax, and a tuned load — is right.
5 shots inside three-quarters of an inch at 100yd. Elite consistency. Now take that precision to distance.
A 5-shot group at or inside 6 inches at 200 yards — roughly 2.9 MOA. Distance doubles the consequence of every fundamental error. Wind, mirage, and hold consistency all matter more out here.
5 shots inside 3 inches at 200 yards — sub-1.5 MOA at distance. You are dialing your DOPE correctly, reading wind, and calling shots. This is the boundary between a shooter and a marksman.
A 5-shot group at or inside 9 inches at 300 yards — roughly 2.9 MOA. Getting rounds in a consistent group at 300 requires verified DOPE, competent wind reading, and a stable position. This is real distance work.
5 shots inside 4.5 inches at 300 yards — sub-1.5 MOA at 300. Wind, load, position, and trigger are all working together. You have earned the right to chase 500.
A 5-shot group inside 10.5 inches at 500 yards — roughly 2 MOA. Your first confirmed work at half a kilometer. DOPE truing starts here: the solver is never perfect, so log your actual point of impact and dial to real data. Wind value doubles on even a light breeze.
5 shots inside 7.3 inches at 500 yards — sub-1.5 MOA. Your DOPE is trued, your wind calls are consistent, and your position holds across the full string. This is the boundary where load quality and barrel precision become the limiting factor, not the shooter.
A 5-shot group inside 12.6 inches at 600 yards — 2 MOA at a distance where mirage bends and wind matters in fractions of a value. Your DOPE is extended and confirmed; you are reading conditions actively through the spotting scope between shots.
A 5-shot group inside 16.7 inches at 800 yards — roughly 2 MOA. Many factory loads approach transonic velocity by 800 yards; the Advanced Ballistics transonic-wall lesson applies here. DOPE truing beyond 600 is mandatory — your solver and barrel are rarely in exact agreement at this distance.
5 shots inside 15.7 inches at 1,000 yards — sub-1.5 MOA at the mile. Most factory loads go transonic before 1,000 yards and destabilize through the subsonic transition. Only a high-BC, heavy-for-caliber load with trued come-up data gets you here consistently. Spin drift, density altitude, and wind in tenths of a value all matter. The Sniper Skillset and Advanced Ballistics tracks prepared you for this.
