The terminal performance problem at distance
A bullet that expands reliably and provides excellent terminal performance at 100 yards may fail entirely at 400 yards. This is not a bullet quality issue — it is physics. Hollow-point expansion requires impact velocity above a threshold. As bullets slow, they may drop below that threshold before reaching the target.
Federal Gold Medal Match 175gr SMK — the gold standard for precision rifle accuracy — is NOT designed for reliable expansion or fragmentation. It is a match bullet; it punches a clean hole. For hunting or defensive use at range, you must select specifically for terminal performance.
Expansion and velocity thresholds
Most hunting hollow-points or bonded bullets require impact velocity of 1800–2200 fps for reliable expansion. A .308 Win 168gr bullet leaves at ~2600 fps. Using a typical G1 0.475 BC, at 600 yards impact velocity drops to approximately 1550–1600 fps — below the expansion threshold for many projectiles.
Manufacturers publish minimum expansion velocities. Take them seriously. Verify using your ballistic solver: at what distance does your load drop below 1800 fps? That is your maximum reliable expansion distance.
Varmint bullets (e.g. Hornady V-MAX, Sierra Blitzking) are designed for explosive fragmentation at high velocity — typically ≥2500 fps. At reduced velocity they may not fragment, becoming poor-performing FMJs.
Penetration and bullet construction
Penetration is the other axis. A bullet that expands too aggressively may not penetrate deeply enough. The FBI standard for defensive use is 12 inches of gelatin penetration after barrier. Highly frangible bullets (lightweight varmint designs) fail this standard; they disintegrate on intermediate barriers.
Bonded bullets (e.g. Federal Trophy Bonded, Nosler Partition, Hornady InterBond) retain core weight through barriers and at varied velocities. They sacrifice some accuracy margin for reliable terminal performance — often an acceptable trade for field use.
Solids (e.g. Barnes TTSX, Cutting Edge Bullets) provide maximum penetration with no expansion and high weight retention. Required for dangerous-game applications or when barriers are a concern.
Matching bullet to application
Match/target bullets (Sierra MatchKing, Berger Hybrid Target): best accuracy, no terminal performance design. Precision training, competition.
Hunting/field bullets (Nosler AccuBond, Hornady ELD-X, Federal Trophy Bonded Tip): designed for reliable expansion from 1800+ fps impact velocity. Acceptable accuracy. Medium game hunting.
Long-range hunting (Hornady ELD-X, Berger Hunting VLD): high BC for accuracy + terminal performance engineered for reduced-velocity expansion. Large game, longer distances.
The shooter's job: verify at what distance your chosen bullet drops below its expansion threshold, and respect that limit in the field. Don't take a 700-yard shot with a bullet rated for 400-yard expansion.
