Dialing vs Holding

Two methods to apply ballistic corrections: dial the turret (adjust the scope's zero) or hold off in the reticle. Know when to use each and how to do both correctly.

Dialing — turret adjustments

Dialing means rotating the elevation and windage turrets to physically move the scope's mechanical zero to the required correction. If your DOPE says 12.4 MIL at 800 yards, you dial 12.4 MIL up on the elevation turret and aim center.

Advantages: you aim at the target center — no mental math during the shot. Easier to confirm you're in the right place. Better for shots where you have time to dial.

Requirements: turrets that track accurately, a zero stop so you can return to 100yd zero without counting clicks, and confidence your scope's mechanics are sound. Cheap scopes with inconsistent tracking will generate dialing errors.

Always verify your turret's actual click value (nominal vs real). Aim at a target, dial 10 MIL up, see where the bullet actually impacts. Does it match? If your scope says 0.1 MIL/click but actually tracks 0.09, your dialing will be off by 10% — significant at distance.

Holding — reticle offset

Holding means leaving your zero alone and using the reticle's subtensions to hold off from the target. If your reticle has 1-MIL increment marks, you aim at the target's 8-MIL line for a shot requiring 8 MIL elevation.

Advantages: fast — no turret movement required. Good for rapidly changing distances (multiple targets at different ranges). Works when there's no time to dial between shots.

Requirements: a first-focal-plane (FFP) scope (the reticle subtensions are correct at any magnification) or a second-focal-plane scope used at its calibration magnification. On a SFP scope at the wrong magnification, your hold is wrong.

Limitations: holding 8+ MIL in the reticle puts your aim point well off the center of the target's vital zone — it's easy to lose track of which mark you're on. At very high holds (>10 MIL) the target is partially out of the field of view.

When to dial, when to hold

Dial when: you have time, you're shooting a single distance repeatedly, conditions allow careful turret manipulation, and the correction is large (>5 MIL).

Hold when: shooting rapid strings at multiple distances, the target is fleeting, the correction is modest (<3 MIL), or you need to return to a base zero immediately after the shot.

For wind: most precision shooters hold for wind even when dialing elevation. Wind changes faster than you can dial it — holding keeps you responsive. Dial elevation, hold wind is a common discipline-wide convention.

Zero stop discipline: if you dial, zero stops are critical. Always return to confirmed zero and verify after returning from field use. Turrets that bump against obstacles will move.
