Body angle: the 10–20 degree rule
Lie directly behind the rifle (0 degrees, spine in line with the bore) and you create problems: the recoil drives straight into your shoulder with nothing to absorb it, your right hip digs into the ground uncomfortably, and your body's mechanical structure doesn't naturally support the rifle.
The solution is to angle your body 10–20 degrees off the line of bore, with your body angled to the shooter's strong side. For a right-handed shooter, your feet and hips point slightly right of the target. This lets recoil push diagonally into your body mass rather than straight back, and your left (support) arm falls into a natural triangle under the rifle.
Beyond 20 degrees, you start requiring your support arm to reach awkwardly to the side, and your cheek weld geometry becomes less consistent.
Leg placement
Spread your legs comfortably — roughly shoulder-width at the knees. Heels flat to the ground. Heels rising off the ground lets your legs bounce against the earth when the rifle fires, transmitting vibration upward into your position.
If you must shoot on a surface that prevents flat heels (steep slope, hard concrete), compensate by angling your legs wider or crossing your ankles to damp vibration.
Avoid bending your knees upward. A bent knee raises your center of gravity, creates a spring that absorbs energy in the wrong direction, and can contact the ground unpredictably.
Elbow placement and the support arm triangle
Your support (left) elbow is a tripod leg. It should be placed directly under the rifle and slightly forward of vertical — not too far forward where your arm is fully extended (loses tension and range of motion) and not too far back where your arm is sharply bent.
The support hand goes under the rear of the stock — either directly under or lightly on a rear bag. It is NOT gripping the forend or the bipod. The forend rests on the bipod; the rear of the stock rests on the rear bag or your hand; your hand manages the rear bag.
The trigger-side (right) elbow rests naturally on the ground beneath your grip, forming the third point of the tripod. Its exact position is determined by what allows a relaxed grip on the pistol grip and a natural trigger-finger reach to the trigger.
Cheek weld: the repeatable head position
Your cheek should touch the stock at the same point on every shot. This is 'cheek weld' or 'spot weld.' Identical head position = identical eye position behind the scope = identical sight picture = consistent point of impact.
The test: look through the scope and verify you see a full, centered, edge-to-edge image with no dark crescent (scope shadow). Shadow means your eye is off-axis — your head is too high, too low, or too far from the ocular. Adjust your head position or cheek riser until the image is clean.
Use your cheekbone on the stock, not your jaw. The cheekbone is a consistent bony reference; the soft tissue of the jaw is not.
After every shot, recover your cheek weld before breaking the next shot. Some shooters physically re-confirm the cheek weld contact point with two fingers before each shot during precision strings.
Adapting prone to uneven terrain
Textbook prone is for flat ground. In the field you'll encounter slopes, rocks, and vegetation. The priorities don't change — you're solving for: (1) bone support rather than muscle, (2) consistent cheek weld, (3) NPA on target.
On a lateral slope, the uphill side of your body will be higher, causing your body to roll. Use extra padding under your downhill hip. Place your feet so your body doesn't roll downhill during recoil.
Over an obstacle (log, berm): raise both elbows on a bag or pack until the rifle can see over the obstacle. The higher support arm triangle means a steeper angle — check cheek weld carefully.
