Why prone isn't enough
Everything you've trained so far assumes the most stable platform a human can build: prone, supported, square to a flat range. That position exists to teach you what a good shot feels like with the fewest variables. The field is the opposite of a flat range. Terrain, vegetation, time, and the target's location conspire to deny you prone more often than not. The shooter who can only perform from prone is a bench shooter, not a field marksman.
The goal of this track is to make you position-agnostic: able to read a piece of ground or a barricade, pick the steadiest option that still lets you see and hit the target, and build it fast. The rifle and the fundamentals don't change — trigger, breathing, NPA, and follow-through are identical. What changes is the structure underneath the rifle.
The position hierarchy
Stability comes from three things: the height of your center of gravity, the amount of ground/support contact, and the size of your base. Lower, more contact, wider base = steadier. That gives a rough hierarchy, steadiest first:
Prone supported → prone unsupported → rollover/reverse prone → sitting (supported) → squatting → kneeling (supported) → kneeling unsupported → standing supported (barricade/tripod) → standing unsupported (offhand). Offhand is the least stable position in shooting and the last resort.
The single most important habit in field shooting: always take the steadiest position the situation allows. If you can get prone and see the target, get prone. If a rock lets you build a supported sitting position instead of kneeling, use the rock. The position is dictated by what you must see over or around, and by how much time you have — never by preference or laziness.
The four universal principles
Whatever the position, four things make it work, and they are the same every time:
1. Bone support, not muscle. A muscled position trembles, fatigues within seconds, and snaps the rifle off target during recoil. Stack bone under the rifle — elbow on knee (bone on bone is actually unstable, so set the soft part of the tricep/elbow just behind the kneecap, not point-on-point), skeleton carrying the load. If a muscle is burning to hold the position, the position is wrong.
2. Maximum contact with support. More surface area touching the ground, the barricade, or your own body damps movement. A forearm laid along a barricade beats a hand pressed against it. A rear bag squeezed under the stock beats a floating support hand.
3. Recoil management / straight-line setup. Build the position so recoil travels straight back into your shoulder and the rifle returns to roughly the same place. A position that's stable but throws the rifle off target on recoil costs you your shot call and your follow-up.
4. Natural Point of Aim. NPA applies in every position, not just prone. After you build the position, relax and check where the reticle settles. Adjust the whole structure — shift your base, rotate your body — until the rifle points naturally at the target with no muscular steering.
Reading the problem
Before you build anything, answer three questions in order: What must I see? (this sets the minimum height), What's available to support the rifle or my body? (bag, barricade, pack, knee, tripod), and How much time do I have? Field and match shooting reward the shooter who solves this in two seconds and starts building, not the one who finds the theoretically perfect position after the clock runs out. A B-minus position you're settled in beats an A-plus position you're still building when the shot is called.
