How stress degrades trigger technique
The startle response and sympathetic activation produce predictable trigger errors: the grip tightens (milking), the trigger press becomes a slap rather than a controlled press, and the anticipation of recoil — always present but normally suppressed by trained technique — reasserts itself.
Flinching is not weakness. It is a reflexive muscle contraction triggered by the brain's expectation of the bang. It is present in virtually all untrained shooters and reasserts itself in trained shooters under sufficient stress. The ball-and-dummy drill exposes it honestly.
The muscles that fire during a flinch are the same ones used in the gross motor response to a threatening event. Under high stress, gross motor movements dominate fine motor ones. Trigger control is fine motor. This is why stress training must happen at the range, not just on the bench.
Recognizing your failure mode
Each shooter has a characteristic stress failure. Learn yours:
Milking: the whole hand tightens as the trigger finger presses. Groups shift low and outward (left for right-handed shooters). Often triggered by time pressure — 'hurrying the gun.'
Flinching/pushing: the muzzle dips downward as the shot breaks. Groups go low. Ball-and-dummy reveals this as a visible muzzle dip on dummy rounds.
Slapping: the trigger finger is yanked rather than pressed. Shot surprises are lost — the press accelerates at the last moment. Groups scatter erratically.
Over-gripping: the pistol grip is held with extreme force, causing tension in the forearm that transmits to the trigger finger. Groups string horizontally.
Diagnose by running ball-and-dummy under time pressure. Your observable reactions on dummies are your failure mode.
Training through stress inoculation
Stress inoculation is deliberately training in uncomfortable conditions until the trained response is more robust than the stress response. The goal isn't to eliminate the stress response — it's to maintain technique in spite of it.
Methods: (1) Physical stress before shooting (elevation of heart rate). (2) Time pressure (par timer). (3) Social pressure (observer, competition). (4) Consequence (a small wager, or committing to a standard publicly). (5) Novelty (new position, new distance, unknown time — the uncertainty itself is stressful).
Begin with one stressor at a time. Master keeping your trigger technique intact with a par timer before adding physical stress. Add stressors incrementally.
The cold bore shot
The cold bore shot — the first shot from a cold barrel at the start of a session — is frequently the most mechanically important shot a precision rifle shooter takes, and the most frequently fumbled.
The barrel has not expanded thermally. You haven't 'warmed up.' You haven't confirmed your zero this session. There's no data yet. A missed cold bore shot wastes time and ammunition chasing a cold-bore flyer that may not represent the rifle's true zero.
Train the cold bore shot with deliberate attention. Before the first trigger pull of every session: run the NPA check, confirm the respiratory pause, set your grip pressure consciously, and take one full second more than you feel you need. The cold bore shot is not the shot to rush.
