Aiming the pistol: front sight vs. dot
With **iron sights** the rule is **front-sight focus**: your eye focuses sharply on the front sight (which appears crisp) while the rear sight and target are slightly blurred, the front sight centered in the rear notch with even light gaps on each side and tops level. The front sight is where your attention lives because errors in front-sight alignment are magnified at the target. With a **red-dot (reflex) sight** — increasingly common on pistols — you focus on the *target* and simply place the dot on it; the dot is faster and more forgiving for many shooters but requires a consistent grip and presentation so the dot appears where you're looking (a fundamentals problem, not an aiming one — if your grip/stance are off, you'll "hunt" for the dot). Either way, the aiming reference goes on the target consistently, the same way every shot.
Tracking the sight through recoil
The skill that separates fast pistol shooters: **watch the sight lift and return in recoil** rather than blinking and re-finding it. When the pistol fires, the front sight (or dot) lifts with recoil and, with a good grip and stance, settles back onto the target. Train to keep your eyes open and *see* the sight through that cycle — its lift tells you about your grip, and watching it return lets you fire the next shot the instant it's back on target. A shooter who stays connected to the sight through recoil shoots fast and accurately; one who blinks and loses the sight has to re-acquire every shot and is slow. This connects directly to the grip and stance lessons — a sight that returns predictably to the target is the payoff of a good platform, and you can only use that payoff if you're watching.
Calling your shot
**Calling the shot** is knowing where the shot went based on where the sight was the instant it broke — before you even see the hole. If you saw the front sight centered on the target as the trigger broke, you called a good shot; if you saw it dip low-left at the break, you called that error and you know why before you look. This is the feedback loop that makes you better: it ties the sight picture at the break to the result, exposes flinches and grip errors, and lets you diagnose your own shooting. Train to call every shot — say where the sight was at the break — and then confirm against the target.
The small offset up close
Like the carbine, a pistol's sights sit slightly *above* the bore — but only about half an inch to an inch, far less than a carbine's 2.5 inches. So a pistol's sight-over-bore offset is small and usually negligible, but it exists: at contact-to-very-close distance on a tiny precise target (or when shooting at distance), the bullet strikes a touch below your aim, and for a precise close-range shot (e.g. a small target or a head shot up close) you hold a hair high to account for it. At normal distances and target sizes it's not something you think about. Mostly, know it exists so a precise close shot that hits a little low isn't a mystery — it's geometry, the same principle as the carbine, just much smaller.
