Why wind dominates at distance
Gravity is constant and predictable — you DOPE it and dial it. Wind is neither. A 10 mph full-value crosswind pushes a .308 175gr bullet roughly 5" at 300 yards, 10" at 500, and over 20" at 700. Beyond 500 yards, a 2–3 mph read error can mean a clean miss on a man-sized target.
Experienced long-range shooters spend far more mental energy on wind than on any other variable. You cannot dial it in advance — you read it in the moment and hold for it.
Estimating wind speed: the Beaufort scale
You rarely have a wind meter at the firing line. Learn to read speed from your environment:
0–3 mph (Calm to Light Air): smoke drifts lazily. Mirage in a spotting scope runs slowly upward with slight lean. Grass undisturbed. Effectively no-value for most loads under 500 yards.
3–5 mph (Light Breeze): leaves rustle intermittently. Mirage runs steadily at a noticeable lean (about 30–45°). A barely perceptible feel on your face. Use a 5 mph hold.
5–8 mph (Gentle Breeze): leaves in constant motion. Flags extend loosely. Mirage nearly flat, running fast. This is the 'common condition' at most ranges. Use a 7–8 mph hold.
8–12 mph (Moderate): small branches sway. Flags fully extended and flapping. Mirage 'boils' — difficult to read direction clearly. Use a 10 mph hold.
12–15 mph (Fresh): large branches move. Dust and paper blow around. Distinctly felt against face. Mirage washes out above about 12–13 mph. Use a 12–15 mph hold; conditions likely gusting.
15+ mph (Strong+): large trees sway. Hold for gusts; shots at calm moments only. Wind noise is audible.
Practice estimating every time you're outdoors. Cross-reference your estimate against a weather app or Kestrel to build calibration over time.
Clock-face direction convention
Wind direction in shooting is described as the direction FROM which the wind comes, using a clock face with 12 o'clock pointing downrange (toward the target).
3 o'clock = wind coming from the RIGHT, pushing bullets left. 9 o'clock = wind from the LEFT, pushing bullets right. 12 o'clock = headwind (coming straight at you from downrange). 6 o'clock = tailwind.
A common point of confusion: meteorologists report the direction wind COMES FROM (a 'north wind' blows south). Shooters do the same — a '3 o'clock wind' originates from your right side.
In the field you often have to estimate: look at grass ripple direction, flag lean, or hold a wet finger and feel which side is cold. The cold side is where the wind is coming from.
Full, half, and no-value wind
The angle of the wind relative to the bullet's path determines how much it moves the bullet. This is the 'value' of the wind.
FULL VALUE (1.0×): Wind from 3 or 9 o'clock — dead perpendicular to the bullet's path. Maximum lateral push. Apply the full computed wind correction.
HALF VALUE (0.5×): Wind from 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, or 11 o'clock — oblique angles. The crosswind component is roughly half the full-value correction. Multiply your hold by 0.5.
NO VALUE (0×): Wind from 12 or 6 o'clock — headwind or tailwind. No lateral push. Headwinds and tailwinds affect velocity slightly (and thus elevation by a small amount at long range) but produce no windage error worth holding for under 600 yards.
These are approximations. Precise trigonometry gives sin(angle from 12 o'clock), but the full/half/no split is accurate enough for field use and is what every serious precision shooter carries in their head.
Applying the hold
Your DOPE card or ballistic solver gives you a wind correction in MIL or MOA for a defined wind speed at 90° (full value). Scale it:
Hold = (solver value at your wind speed) × (value factor for direction)
Example: solver says 10 mph wind = 1.0 MIL at 500 yards. Wind is from 2 o'clock (half value). Hold = 1.0 × 0.5 = 0.5 MIL into the wind.
If you know the correction at 10 mph and wind is 7 mph: Hold = (7/10) × full-value correction. Wind math is just ratios.
Hold into the wind — dial windage toward the wind origin, or hold the reticle into the wind so the bullet is pushed back to center. Most precision shooters hold rather than dial, since wind changes between shots.
After each shot, observe trace (the bullet's visible vapor trail through a spotting scope) and the impact. Correct your hold for the next shot. Wind reading is a skill refined by hundreds of repetitions.
