What you are protecting
Modern scope lenses carry multiple thin coating layers: anti-reflection (reduces glare and light loss), hydrophobic (sheds water), and scratch-resistant coatings. These layers are far thinner and more fragile than the glass underneath. A single grit particle dragged across the lens under a dry cloth can leave a permanent scratch that degrades contrast for the life of the scope.
Cheap wipes, paper towels, cotton t-shirts, and breath-plus-wipe are all damage risks. They deposit oil, abrasive debris, or both. Use dedicated optical cleaning materials.
The correct cleaning sequence
Step 1: remove loose debris first. Use a lens blower (rubber bulb or squeeze bottle — not canned compressed air, which deposits propellant residue and can blast liquid onto the lens). Blow off dust and grit before touching the lens.
Step 2: use a soft lens brush (camel hair or equivalent) to gently sweep any remaining particles off the lens surface. Work outward from center.
Step 3: apply one to two drops of optical-grade lens fluid (Zeiss Lens Cleaner, Eclipse, or equivalent) to a clean, dry microfiber cloth — never directly onto the lens.
Step 4: wipe in straight strokes from the center outward. Never circular — circular motions grind any remaining particles across the full coating surface. Use a fresh section of cloth for each stroke.
Step 5: follow with a dry section of the microfiber cloth to remove residue. Inspect with a light source at an oblique angle.
Field cleaning
At the range or in the field, a full kit is not always practical. A lens pen — a brush on one end, a carbon compound cleaning tip on the other — handles the most common situations. Brush first, then use the carbon tip for smears and fingerprints.
Fingerprints are the most urgent contamination to remove. Skin oils bond to coatings and, if left, become increasingly difficult to remove over time. In the field, prioritize getting fingerprints off objective and ocular lenses within a few hours.
Storage and long-term care
Always store with lens caps installed. A scope left uncapped on a bench collects dust, condensation, and UV exposure that accelerates coating degradation. Keep in a padded case when transporting.
If your scope fogs internally, the nitrogen purge seal has failed. Silica desiccant in the case reduces external moisture but cannot fix internal fogging — that requires factory service or replacement.
If tracking accuracy degrades (dialing corrections that no longer move POI as expected), the internal erector assembly may be failing. This is a service or replace decision — do not attempt to repair a scope yourself unless you are a factory-trained technician.
