Stretching the Carbine: Holds to 500

The carbine is a closer-range tool, but a capable shooter reaches well past 200 with the right holds. Learn the 5.56 trajectory past the far zero, building a simple holdover card, and why a light, fast bullet is so wind-sensitive at distance.

The carbine past its comfort zone

With a 50/200 zero you hold dead-center to ~250 yards (Carbine Fundamentals). Past that, the light bullet drops increasingly and a center hold misses low. The practical carbine shooter who can reach 300, 400, and 500 yards with confident holds has dramatically expanded the rifle's usefulness — but only by knowing the trajectory and the wind, exactly as a precision shooter does, scaled to a faster, lighter, lower-BC projectile.

The 5.56 trajectory past the far zero

A typical 5.56 load (e.g. 55–77gr) with a 50/200 zero is roughly flat to 250, then drops at an accelerating rate. Approximate holdovers as a starting point only — you must confirm with your own rifle, load, and conditions (this is exactly what the app's DOPE and come-up tools are for):

~300 yards: a modest holdover — on the order of a half to one mil / a couple MOA / several inches.

~400 yards: noticeably more — roughly 1.5–2.5 mil / several MOA / a foot-plus.

~500 yards: substantial — on the order of 3+ mil / many MOA / a couple feet, and the round is bleeding speed and energy fast.

Heavier, higher-BC 5.56 bullets (e.g. 75–77gr) shoot flatter and buck wind better at these ranges than light 55gr, which is why they're preferred for stretching the carbine. The exact numbers vary enough between loads that a generic chart is only a rough guide — your confirmed DOPE is the real answer.

Building a holdover card

Turn confirmed data into a simple, usable card. Shoot your carbine at 300, 400, and 500 (or as far as your range allows), record the actual come-up to center at each, and write a compact holdover card you can reference or memorize — distance and the corresponding hold in your reticle's units, or in reticle subtensions if you have a BDC/tree reticle. An LPVO with a mil or BDC reticle lets you simply use the right hash; a red dot means holding the dot the right amount over, using target size as a ruler (the ranging logic from Wind & Ballistics and the Sniper Skillset). Confirm any BDC reticle's marks against your real drops before trusting them — generic BDCs are calibrated to a generic load and rarely match yours exactly. Record it all in the app's DOPE so it's paired with the conditions you confirmed it in.

The wind problem with a light bullet

The hard truth about reaching out with a carbine: the light, relatively low-BC 5.56 bullet is very wind-sensitive at distance — proportionally more affected by a given crosswind than a heavier precision-rifle bullet, because it sheds velocity faster and spends more time exposed to the wind for the distance covered. At 400–500 yards a moderate crosswind moves a 5.56 round a surprising amount — often more wind hold than elevation surprises people. This means stretching the carbine is as much a wind-reading problem as a holdover problem, and the wind skills from the Wind & Ballistics track apply directly. Practically: past ~300 yards, read the wind every time, expect to hold meaningful windage, and understand that the carbine's effective precision at distance is usually limited by wind (and the transonic/energy limits of the cartridge) more than by your hold. Know your honest max effective range with the carbine the same way you would a precision rifle.

At the range

If your range allows, shoot your carbine at 300, 400, and 500 yards, recording the actual come-up to center at each in the app's DOPE. Build a holdover card from it. Then shoot 400 in a crosswind and note how much windage you need — that wind sensitivity is the real limit on reaching out with a carbine.
