Why the carbine shooter needs positions too
Carbine Fundamentals built your standing platform because that's where the practical rifle lives. But "accurate enough, fast" still gets harder as distance grows or the target shrinks, and standing is the least stable position there is. The practical-carbine answer is the same as the precision-rifle answer from Field Craft: take the steadiest position the situation allows. The difference is the carbine demands you build it fast, often from standing, and frequently around cover or an obstacle rather than on open flat ground.
The position hierarchy still applies — lower and more contact is steadier — but the carbine shooter values speed in and out of a position more heavily, because the practical problem usually involves movement, multiple targets, or a clock. You're balancing stability against the time to build and the time to leave.
The core practical positions
Kneeling. The workhorse. Drop the firing-side knee, support-side foot forward and flat, and brace the support-side triceps just behind (not on) the support-side knee. Fast to enter and exit, meaningfully steadier than standing, and a great default for a quick steadier shot or to get slightly lower. Variants: high kneeling (up on the toes of the rear foot, faster but less stable) and a more settled low kneeling (sitting back onto the rear heel for more support).
Squatting. Drop into a deep squat, both feet flat, elbows braced inside or on the knees. Quick, requires no ground prep, and works on terrain where you don't want to kneel. Stability depends on your mobility — for those who can hold it, it's a fast medium-height option.
Sitting. Lower and steadier than kneeling — cross-legged, cross-ankle, or open-leg with elbows braced on or inside the knees. Slower to enter and exit, but a stable shooting platform for a deliberate carbine shot at distance when you have a moment.
Rollover / urban prone. When you must shoot under an obstacle (a vehicle, a low gap) or around the side of low cover, you can't use a conventional prone — the magazine and your body are in the way. Rollover prone has you on your side, the rifle canted over (often nearly horizontal), firing under or around the obstruction. It's awkward, induces heavy cant (mind your offset and zero — a canted carbine at distance throws the shot), and is a specialty tool: stable and very low, but only for when the cover or the gap demands it.
Building around cover and obstacles
Unlike a square-range prone, practical positions are usually dictated by cover and what you must see around or over. You build the position to use the barricade, the vehicle, the wall, or the low cover — bracing into it as taught in Field Craft (load the support, soft or braced contact, never the bare rifle on a hard edge). The position you pick is whichever steady option lets you see and engage the target while staying behind your cover. That often means a kneeling or squatting position behind a low wall rather than the technically-steadier sitting you'd choose on an open range.
Speed of entry and exit
Drill the entry to each position as a motor program (the Field Craft rapid-entry sequence applies): eyes to target, drop into position, mount, settle, break. Equally important for the carbine is the exit — getting back up and moving efficiently, because practical problems chain positions and movement together. Practice dropping into kneeling and breaking an accurate shot on a beep, then standing and moving, until both directions are smooth. A position you can enter and leave quickly is worth more to a carbine shooter than a marginally steadier one you're slow to use.
