How Sights Work

Aiming is lining up your eye, the sights, and the target consistently. Learn the difference between iron sights and optics, sight alignment versus sight picture, point of aim versus point of impact, and what "zero" means in one sentence.

Aiming is alignment

Hitting a target is, at its core, pointing the barrel at it precisely and consistently — and sights are the tools that let your eye verify that the barrel is pointed correctly. This lesson is the bridge to the marksmanship Fundamentals track: understanding how sights work conceptually now will make those lessons land. We'll keep it simple.

Iron sights vs. optics

Iron sights are physical metal sights — typically a rear sight and a front sight you line up with each other and the target. Optics are sighting devices you look through: a red dot (a simple illuminated dot you place on the target — fast and intuitive) or a scope/telescopic sight (which magnifies the target and has a reticle, the crosshair or aiming mark inside, that you place on the target). This app's precision-rifle focus uses scopes, but the aiming principles are the same for all: place the aiming reference on the target, consistently, the same way every time.

Sight alignment and sight picture

Two terms you'll hear constantly: Sight alignment is getting the sights themselves correctly lined up with your eye — for iron sights, the front sight centered in the rear notch, level and even; for a scope, your eye centered behind the scope so you see a full, clear image with the reticle centered (no shadow at the edges). Sight picture is what you see when correctly-aligned sights are placed on the target — the whole picture of aligned sights plus target with your aiming point where you want to hit. The key for a beginner: a consistent sight alignment and sight picture — the same eye position, the same relationship, every shot — is what produces consistent hits. Inconsistency here moves your shots around.

Point of aim, point of impact, and zero

Point of aim is where your sights are pointed — where you're aiming. Point of impact is where the bullet actually hits. Ideally they're the same, but they only match if the sights are adjusted correctly for the distance. Zeroing is the process of adjusting your sights so that your point of aim equals your point of impact at a chosen distance — in one sentence: zeroing makes the gun hit where you aim at a set distance. You don't need the details yet (the Fundamentals and DOPE material cover it fully); just understand that sights are adjustable, that "zeroed" means aim and impact agree at a known distance, and that consistent aiming is what lets a zeroed rifle hit reliably.
