Cold Bore Shot
intermediateWhere does your very first shot land compared to your zero? Most precision rifles shoot slightly differently cold. Know your offset.
Fire a single round from your supported prone position at the center of the target. Do not anticipate. This shot must represent your true first-round capability.
100-yard clean target. Your rifle has been sitting at ambient temperature for at least 30 minutes (or overnight). Do NOT dry fire or chamber a round first. Load one round only.
Measure the deviation from your zero: vertical inches (+ = high) and horizontal inches (+ = right). Track this over multiple sessions to establish your cold-bore offset. Many rifles shoot 0.3–0.8" low and slightly left or right when cold.
